The Problem

Haven Holiday Parks in Wales were looking for some recycling units so that holidaymakers could recycle out and about across the parks. Visitors to the parks already have the opportunity to recycle inside their accommodation, but Haven wanted to increase this opportunity to recycle on the go too. Haven aim to cut their carbon footprint by 10% by the end of 2013, and 50% by 2020.

The Solution

The ‘Recycle on the Go’ scheme from WRAP Cymru (Waste & Resources Action Programme in Wales) aims to provide grants for businesses to supply recycling facilities for people to use when they are out and about. This was the perfect opportunity for Haven to access funding and support this initiative, raising awareness of RotG and boosting recycling rates within the holiday parks. Schemes like this will really make a difference to the amount of waste, which previously would have gone to landfill.

Haven approached Wybone through Plan Recycling Consulting to create the bespoke recycling units for the project. The RLA recycling units were proposed and Haven accepted them. The recycling units are constructed from glass fibre composite (GFC) with a timber or recycled plastic slatted front – 66% of recycled material is used in their construction. The strong GFC body is available in a variety of colours with the slatted front in light oak, dark oak, or wood effect recycled plastic. The RLA’s are available in single, double, triple and quad units enabling recycling of up to four waste streams. Galvanised steel liners are integrated with the front panel sections making the unit really easy to empty. The timber slats help the unit blend into outdoor surroundings so it looks fantastic in parks, open spaces, and perfect for the Haven holiday parks!

The Result

Haven Holiday’s, WRAP Cymru, Plan Recycling Consulting and Wybone have created the perfect collaboration to help visitors recycle whilst on holiday. Wybone have installed the RLA recycling units across six of Haven’s holiday parks in Wales. The recycling units will provide visitors the opportunity to recycle their cans, plastic bottles, news- papers and cardboard on the go around the parks.

The launch of Haven’s brand new recycling units took place in Gwynedd on 20th June and was met with astound- ing success. Visitors and staff really got involved and highlighted what the project has to offer. Andy Newton from Plan Recycling Consulting said of the launch “It’s been an incredible day and really brings to life what can be achieved through a project such as this one.” WRAP Cymru Recycle on the Go Project Manager Ruth Llewellyn said “If Wales is to reach its target of recycling 70 per cent of its waste by 2025, we can’t just recycle when we’re at home. It’s essential that we recycle when we’re out and about – including on holiday.”
