Wybone’s Torpedo Recycling Bins for Manchester Airport

Wybone have recently delivered hugely successful “Torpedo” Recycling Litter Bins to Manchester Airport.
Manchester is the UKs largest airport outside of London and it is the first to have a ‘recycling zone.’ They are aiming to recycle an additional 200 tonnes of passenger waste from the terminals each year by working in conjunction with Coca Cola.

The specially designed three compartment recycling litter bins are located in the terminals and departure gates, and are expected to collect one million plastic bottles at the point of consumption each year.
Manchester Airport sees the scheme as not only encouraging people to recycle their empties, but also to remind them to think about recycling as part of their everyday lives.

The brief from Manchester Airport

“We needed a recycling bin suitable for the newly refurbished terminal concourses and couldn’t find anything on the market that fitted the bill. Wybone were very keen to work with us and very quickly tweaked the design of an exist- ing bin to meet our specification, but without adding a premium price for having a bespoke bin. The new Torpedo bin looks really smart, has good recycling functionality, is easy for the cleaners to empty and clean and is robust enough to stand the use it will get at the airport. We are really pleased with the results and now have the other airports in the group wanting some. The bins look great and we have had lots of positive feedback on them. Many thanks for all your efforts in working with us to get something that met our requirements.”

Security Bins

Following the success of the Torpedo Recycling Bins, Manchester has now also had specially designed transparent litter bins developed for use in their secure zones. The bins needed to have clear panels, so any potential security threats could be easily seen. To do this we used ‘lexan’ a polycarbonate resin thermoplastic which features excellent UV protection and has the highest impact strength of any transparent glazing product to make the transparent front panels.

As the bins were to be situated within the secure zone, they also needed to be able to be closed off to prevent them from being used during high profile visits, or any security alerts. As a result the bins feature magnetic security plates which can lock off the apertures when needed.
