Food Waste

Earlier this year, we manufactured bespoke food waste wheelie bin housing units for Islington Borough Council that were installed at communal properties to provide an improved food waste service in the area.

The installations were part of Islington Council’s on-going Better Recycle Sites capital program that aims to reduce contamination of materials and fly tipping in communal recycling sites.

Our Food Waste Wheelie Bin Covers are manufactured from galvanised steel and feature a slanted lid that’s designed to allow rainwater to run off, with a lift up flap on the lid that helps to contain unwanted odours and a stainless steel handle makes opening easy and hygienic.

Each bin houses a 240-litre wheelie bin, and have been installed in high-density estates where there have been issues with odour and contamination, and the bins being moved or stolen.

Their new program now provides residents with internal food waste caddies and access to our food waste wheelie bin housing units around the borough.

Our units have been well received among both council staff and residents. James Miller, a resident at Gambier House said: “They are much nicer and easier to operate as a result of their soft closing lids, and they suit the look of our block.

Thanks to the handles on the lid, they are user friendly, so people don’t leave the bags beside the bins anymore, but put them inside. There is no excuse for them not to do it anymore since the handles are always clean, you didn’t want to touch the handles on the old bins sometimes.”

Pawel Ryczan, Waste and Recycling Minimisation Officer, states that they have received only positive comments so far, and an increased interest in the service.

“We used the Wybone units to house bins on established sites. Units are clearly labelled using WRAP iconography, so the message is now easier to read and understand. Since installation three months ago, the reported contamination is down to zero in all installed housing units.”

Subject to funding, Islington Council is looking to purchase more of our food waste bin housing units in the future.

Ernest Okrah, Estate Services Team Leader concluded. “I would commend the waste and recycling team for delivering these new food waste recycling bins, they look much better on the estate, are user friendly and also environmentally friendly. I would certainly like to request more of them to be installed on our estates.”
