We’re helping organisations with their cup recycling schemes

July 24, 2018

The debate around disposable coffee cups has become a household recycling name since chef and environmentalist Hugh Fernley Wittingstall revealed that only 1 in 400 disposable cups are recycled in the UK.

Over the last few years, awareness has grown and retailers are working together in an attempt to reduce this soaring figure. Companies such as Costa and Starbucks have introduced a ‘latte levy’ to prevent customers from using disposable cups. Pret a Manger, Greggs and Café Nero offer the incentive of discounts on hot drinks when customers bring their own reusable cups.

We design and manufacture litter and recycling bins to encourage users to make the right decision when it comes to rubbish – with this in mind, we designed and manufactured a range of cup recycling units to encourage the correct disposal of coffee cups.

We’ve recently started working with Simply Cups, an organisation formed purely to address the UK’s fastest growing waste stream and to provide a service to collect the materials and send them directly to re-processors with a full audit trail, giving the customer peace of mind that their waste is actually being recycled. Both our Eco and Deluxe Cup Recycling Units are available to buy on the Simply Cups website.

Full wrap artwork is becoming a popular choice on our cup recycling units, as it allows customers to create bespoke recycling artwork and branding which can be displayed on the body of the bin. Our Eco Cup Units will full wrap artwork are being used as part of London Energy’s #MochaDifference campaign – encouraging users to dispose of their coffee cups correctly or to invest in a reusable cup.

Gosport Borough Council have partnered with paper cup manufacturer Huhtamaki and introduced our Deluxe Cup Recycling Units with Gosport branding on the body of the bin, these bins will be used as dedicated cup recycling points at sites across Gosport.

We have recently introduced a Cup Recycling Unit for Secure Environments, designed with perforations to make the contents visible. Manufactured in the same way as our cup recycling suite of products, with a rolled circular galvanised steel body and vacuum formed plastic lid.

The contemporary design of this bin has primarily been designed with secure locations in mind. Airports, shopping centres and stadiums will benefit from the partially see through body of the bin, which has small circular holes to make it easy to identify any suspect items.

This large circular bin has the capacity to collect up to 100 litres of disposable coffee cups and lids, with an additional smaller aperture to collect up to 3.5 litres of waste liquid.

We have further developed a Box Cycle Cup Recycling Bin which has a completely transparent polythene body. The transparency offers a number of benefits, including making the waste stream visible therefore encouraging the correct use, highlighting any miscellaneous objects that could pose a security risk and giving a visual cue as to when the bin needs to be emptied.

This bin functions the same way as our cup recycling units, with three separate compartments for cups, lids and liquids, and features internal sack retention frames to keep the waste bag in place, neatly tucked away inside the unit so that there is no unsightly overhang.

Designed like our Food Donation Unit, simply remove the galvanised steel lid and lift the frame to release the bag. Replace with empty bags and fold the frame back down to secure.
