When councils invest in new litter bins, the conversation often focuses on durability, capacity, maintenance and cost. While these are all important considerations, street furniture has the potential to achieve much more than simply keeping public spaces clean.

Wybone manufactured 1,000 bespoke litter bins featuring Swoopy the Owl, the campaign’s anti-litter mascot. The project formed part of Leeds’ wider initiative to encourage cleaner streets while creating a recognisable symbol that residents could engage with.
The response exceeded expectations. Residents took to social media searching for the city’s 1,000th bin, creating so much excitement that Leeds City Council invited the public to vote on where the milestone bin should be installed. To celebrate the campaign, Wybone manufactured a special gold edition of Bin 1,000, giving residents one final landmark to discover.
What began as a litter bin replacement programme quickly evolved into a community-led campaign that generated positive publicity, encouraged civic pride and demonstrated how public realm projects can capture the imagination of local communities.
Manchester has adopted a similar approach with one of the country’s most recognisable civic symbols.
Over the years, Wybone has worked with Manchester City Council to manufacture a range of bespoke litter bins featuring the famous Manchester Bee, from standard MLB/112 designs to special Pride-themed editions.
The Manchester Bee represents resilience, community and belonging.
By incorporating it into everyday street furniture, the city has extended that identity into public spaces, creating infrastructure that is both practical and instantly recognisable.
