Hubbub Launches New In The Loop Recycling Toolkit and Funding Initiative

We’re pleased to announce that Hubbub, one of our environmental services partners, have launched their latest recycling initiative and funding opportunity.

#InTheLoop is Hubbub’s collaborative project to boost recycling on-the-go and make it easy for people to recycle drinks materials while out and about. Based on learnings from several successful trials across the UK and Ireland, they have published the ‘In The Loop’ toolkit, a website to provide you with insight on how to improve out of home recycling in your local area.

In addition to this brilliant resource, visitors to the website will be able to apply for a funding opportunity that will provide £25,000 to 4 suitable organisations to support the introduction on-the-go recycling infrastructure.

Gavin Ellis, co-founder of Hubbub, said: “Our new toolkit pulls together key insights from seven trials in a variety of UK locations that have taken place over the last four years. Our ambition is for #InTheLoop to become a recognised and effective approach to out of home recycling that can be replicated throughout the UK and beyond. We hope sharing our results and learnings openly will be useful to local authorities looking to improve their recycling services.

Below, we’ve included a breakdown of #InTheLoop’s recycling toolkit and details on how to apply for the £25,000 funding.

Toolkit

#InTheLoop is a complete guide for organisations wanting to introduce or optimise on-the-go recycling in their region. Through extensive research, they’ve highlighted 6 key factors for a successful and effective recycling project.

Bright Bins

Making bins stand out in busy public spaces is critical if you want people to recognise and use them. Bright, colourful bins can be a great option when looking to attract people’s attention.

Be Specific

People will spend less than 2 seconds at a bin, which makes clear and concise messaging an important part of recycling strategy. By using terms such as ‘empty plastic bottles’ as opposed to ‘mixed recycling’, you’ll typically see a significantly reduced quantities of incorrectly recycled material.

Bins Need Buddies

Without general waste bins in close proximity, recycling bins tend to receive all kinds of waste. By ensuring you have multiple types of waste and recycling bins together, you’ll significantly reduce the likelihood of incorrect contamination.

Keep It Positive & Simple

Repetition of positive messaging is a great way to encourage improved recycling behaviour. Research suggests that people may have to hear or see things up to 7 times before it influences their actions, meaning your recycling messaging should be consistently present to have the desired impact.

Build a Partnership

Working with local partner organisations is a simple way to enhance the visibility of your recycling projects. This could be through in-store posters, social media posts or in-person events intended to raise awareness of recycling infrastructure or appropriate recycling practise.

Measure and Make Better

Recycling performance can be improved through composition analysis, public surveys and on-the-ground observations. By evaluating what works and what doesn’t, you can change your approach accordingly. Your recycling strategy should evolve alongside user behaviour.

Funding

In collaboration with the Coca-Cola Foundation, the #InTheLoop grant fund has been established to help local authorities and other organisations promote out of home recycling.

This fund will offer 4 applicants £25,000 each to launch new projects with the explicit goal increasing the number of recycling points in areas that include waterways, such as coastline, riverways, canals, docks and wetlands. This initiative seeks to build upon the success of the 7 #InTheLoop campaigns, and Treasure Your River, the largest ever collaboration to reduce litter along fiver major UK rivers.

This initiative is open to all organisations involved in management of public spaces that include a waterway, including:

• Local authorities
• Business improvement districts
• Major property owners or those who manage public spaces
• Transport hubs such as airports and train stations

Deadline for applications is 15th December.
