In the Spotlight… Road Hog Roadside Litter Bin

August 1, 2018

Approximately 200,000 sacks of refuse are collected from our motorways annually, which costs around £6 million a year to clean up. In response to these figures, we’ve designed a unit to help reduce the amount of litter on our motorways and service stations.

What is the Road Hog?

The Road Hog Roadside Litter Bin has been designed based on feedback from Highways England, after they found that road users often throw rubbish from their vehicles, resulting in the areas surrounding the bin being left littered and untidy. The unit is able to hold a 140 litre wheelie bin to collect high volumes of waste and still be conveniently emptied by refuse trucks.

What is this litter bin manufactured from?

This bin is based on our BWB, manufactured from premium quality galvanised steel and powder coated for complete corrosion resistance, with a durable colourful plastic aperture. This bin is fitted with a galvanised steel hood with a large wide aperture to ensure litter is deflected inside the bin, even when it is thrown from height.

Why were these bins manufactured?

These bins were originally manufactured for Highways England but more recently for Hubbub, as part of their #DriveDownLitter campaign. This campaign is being backed by a range of partners including Highways England, Shell, Costa Express, Roadchef, the 13 Kent councils across the Kent Resource Partnership and even comedian Vic Reeves – to encourage road users to dispose of their rubbish correctly. Can this bin be customised?

The images shown are the bins we manufactured for Hubbub, with bespoke text at the top. The vinyl chevrons and plastic aperture come as standard, in your choice of colours – see our new colour guide for more information. If you’re looking to add bespoke artwork or you would like a non-standard colour, our in-house design team will be more than happy to discuss your requirements.

Where are these bins best suited?

This roadside bin is ideal for use on motorways, service stations and at fast food restaurants due to the large hooded aperture; ensuring all rubbish is deposited inside the bin, even if thrown from a car or van.

Where can I see these bins?

Our Road Hogs are currently on trial at Maidstone and Folkestone services for a six month period, which also includes the installation of the first ever ‘recycling reward’ machines in a UK service station, where visitors to the services can exchange plastic bottles and coffee cups for money-off vouchers. If the six-month pilot proves successful, Hubbub hopes to expand the campaign across England’s 1,800 miles of motorways.

How do I empty this bin?

The door is situated on the back of the unit for ease of emptying; a standard Wybone Budget Lock Key opens the unit to conveniently wheel the internal bin* in and out of the Road Hog, and no key is required to lock it after use – firmly closing the door will secure it in place. Take a look at our Road Hog Litter Bin in more detail in our product video!
