Jargon Buster – What is powder coating?

February 13, 2020

We’ve been in the manufacturing industry for the last 50 years, so we understand the ins and outs of the sector and the terms that come with it. We also appreciate that it’s far more complicated from an outsider’s point of view, so we’ve created this handy guide to help our customers with some of our technical jargon.

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a type of finish that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint – which is applied as an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured with heat.

What are the advantages of powder coating?

Powder coating offers durability; when the coating has been cured, it forms a protective finish that is much harder than conventional paint and is much more resistant against scratches, scuffs and colour fading. We’re so confident in our metalwork and powder coating process, we offer a 10 year anti-perforation warranty on our steel litter bins – this guarantees the surface of the bin from rusting through completely.

During the powder coating process, any powder that does not adhere to the surface of the product is collected and reused, meaning that there is little waste. We powder coat all of our products in a sealed environment, which means that there is little to no risk of air pollution.

Powder coating processing times are generally much quicker than wet paints. As there is no solvent in the dry powder, a second coat of paint isn’t required. Instead, the powder coated products can be moved directly into the oven for curing, which offers substantial time saving in the manufacturing process.

How do we use it for manufacturing?

All of our metal products are powder coated during the finishing process. This offers excellent corrosion and scuff resistance which is perfect for street furniture.

We also powder coat the components for our clinical waste bins, such as the pedals and frames. As they’re being used in busy ward environments, the powder coating process adds a level of resistance against knocks and scratches.

Our metal products are made from a sheet of durable galvanised steel which is shaped on our high-tech press brakes and welded to form a metal litter bin carcass. It’s then taken to the spray booth where it’s primed and powder coated through a spray gun with a dry colour powder of the customer’s choice. Take a look at our metalwork production video to see how it’s done!

We offer our powder coating services to other businesses in Yorkshire…

We’ve been working with car tuning specialist Peron Automotive, who are just down the road from us in Hoyland, for many years now. Peron manufacture bespoke car parts, which are then sent to us for our efficient powder coating to ensure they last for years to come. We also do this for Gripple, who are a manufacturer based in Sheffield. We offer our powder coating services on their wire-based products, which produces a hardwearing finish.
