At Wybone, we’re passionate about supporting the next generation of engineers, designers and manufacturers. Last week, we welcomed two Year 10 students from Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield, for a week of work experience at our Barnsley manufacturing facility.
Experiencing Every Department
Throughout the week, the students gained first-hand experience of how a UK manufacturer operates, spending time with every department across the business. From design and engineering to production, sales, marketing and customer service, they were introduced to the people and processes involved in taking a product from concept through to completion.
From CAD Design to Laser-Cut Steel
To put their new skills into practice, the students were challenged to design their own personalised clocks using CAD software. Once their designs were complete, our manufacturing team laser cut them from steel, allowing the students to see their digital designs transformed into finished products made right here in our factory.
Each student created a unique design that reflected their own interests, including a Johnny Cash-inspired clock and a lily silhouette clock, before taking them home as a reminder of their week at Wybone.
Working on a Live Product Design Brief
The students also took on a live design challenge inspired by one of our current product development projects. Working alongside our design team, they produced concepts for a multifunctional grit bin that could also be be used as public seating, encouraging creative thinking while considering practicality, durability and usability.
Giving students the opportunity to work on real-world projects helps demonstrate how ideas evolve from an initial concept into products that solve genuine customer challenges.
Supporting Future Careers in Manufacturing
Work experience provides an invaluable opportunity for young people to explore careers in manufacturing, engineering and product design while developing confidence, creativity and problem-solving skills in a real working environment.
We’re proud to support local schools by offering placements that give students meaningful, hands-on experience rather than simply observing from the sidelines.
A big thank you to everyone across the Wybone team who gave their time throughout the week to share their knowledge and help make the placement an enjoyable and rewarding experience. We wish both students every success in their future studies.
