The Secure Mental Health Bin is a purpose designed waste unit for use in hospitals and clinical settings where added safety and security is required.
Wybone’s Mental Health Security Waste Bin has been specifically developed for healthcare settings where patient safety, ligature reduction, and controlled access are paramount.
Designed in collaboration with NHS clinical professionals, this unit addresses the practical and behavioural risks associated with waste disposal in mental health and high-dependency environments.
Available in 28, 42, and 80-litre capacities, the bin integrates controlled-access engineering, hygienic hands-free operation, and a no-return internal chute system to minimise risk and prevent retrieval of deposited items.
Developed in consultation with NHS professionals, this waste solution reflects real-world operational needs while prioritising patient safeguarding.
– Mental health wards
– Psychiatric units
– Secure healthcare environments
– Acute hospitals
– High-dependency units
– Custodial healthcare settings
This is not a standard pedal bin. It is a purpose-built clinical waste solution designed to:
– Reduce ligature opportunity
– Prevent concealment and retrieval of items
– Eliminate accessible anchor points
– Restrict unauthorised access to contents
– Support infection prevention protocols
Every component has been designed to minimise risk exposure while maintaining operational practicality for healthcare staff.
The restricted internal aperture and one-way chute design prevent deposited items from being retrieved.
This reduces opportunity for:
– Concealment
– Contraband retrieval
– Self-harm facilitation
Clinical or domestic waste can be deposited in the unit using the foot pedal operated chute. Pressing the foot pedal opens the chute which has been expertly designed to ensure no rubbish can be retrieved from the bin once it has been deposited. A gas strut fitted to the back of the unit guarantees that the lid closes slowly and minimises any chance of accidents.
Unlike traditional clinical bins, this unit incorporates a moulded, water-tight plastic liner.
– No bag required
– No liner collapse
– No leakage risk
– Simple wipe-clean maintenance
– Improved hygiene control
The rigid internal liner prevents sagging or distortion, maintaining consistent safe internal access geometry.
A fully concealed slimline foot pedal activates the disposal chute.
– Hands-free use supports infection control
– Mechanical components are fully enclosed
– No exposed mechanisms
– No external tamper points
The pedal system is engineered for durability while remaining inaccessible to patients.
A lockable access door with anti-prise tab ensures:
– Authorised access only
– Secure waste removal
– Tamper resistance
– Protection of internal contents
The front opening door ensures the bin can be easily accessed only by those that are permitted to empty the units, and the waste bag can be swiftly and conveniently removed. Folded edges on the lid of the bin are used to completely cover the chute operating system and ensure that there is no visibility of the inner waste bag. All moving parts on this unit are enclosed to secure any possible ligature points. The 80 litre Secure Mental Health Bin and its contents are secured by two key locks (only one on the 28 and 42 litre sizes) to the top and bottom.
The external form incorporates:
– Rounded corners
– Smooth surfaces
– Minimal projection points
– Flat-back profile with minimum projecting wheels for flush wall positioning
The geometry has been developed to reduce ligature opportunity in high-risk environments.
– Anti-microbial coated exterior
– Hands-free activation
– Bagless internal liner
– Smooth, wipe-clean surfaces
The design supports healthcare infection prevention standards in acute and mental health settings.
The Secure Waste Bin is manufactured from a combination of galvanised steel. The lid and body are powder coated galvanised steel which offers superior levels of corrosion resistance.
Built in castors make the unit easy to manoeuvre and the removable, front opening body makes the bin simple to clean. The powder coated steel contains silver ion anti-microbial coating to reduce the risk of harmful bacteria spreading on the surface of the bin.
As with all Wybone sackholders, the Mental Health Bin conforms to the fire safety code HTM0503.
Please be aware that due to this being a security unit, capacity in the chute system is limited, all waste must be condensed down where possible.

Yes. The unit has been specifically designed for environments where patient safety is critical, including mental health wards and secure healthcare settings. Its reduced-ligature design, controlled internal access, and tamper-resistant construction support safer clinical environments.
Yes. The one-way internal chute system and restricted aperture prevent access to contents once waste has been deposited. This reduces the risk of concealment, contraband retrieval, or reuse of disposed items.
Yes. The bin has been engineered with reduced ligature principles in mind. Rounded corners, smooth surfaces, minimal projections, enclosed mechanisms, and a flush wall-mounted profile reduce potential anchor points.
Yes. The disposal chute is operated via a fully concealed slimline foot pedal, enabling hands-free use and supporting infection prevention protocols.
No. All mechanical components are safely enclosed within the unit, reducing tampering risk and preventing access to operational mechanisms.
No. The unit incorporates a moulded, watertight internal plastic liner, eliminating the need for disposable bags. This prevents sagging, leakage, and distortion of the internal access geometry.
The bin is available in three capacities:
28 litre
42 litre
80 litre

This Secure Mental Health Bin is designed to fit a 28, 42, 80 litre sized sack depending on which size is requested.
All sizes of the Secure Mental Health Bin can be fixed directly to the wall using an anti-ligature plate, similar to those used within NHS environments.
The flat-back design enables secure, flush positioning against the wall, reducing movement and minimising ligature opportunity.
The Secure Mental Health Bin is designed as a high-security waste collection unit. It is fitted with locks on the door, which must be unlocked to gain access, preventing members of the public or patients from accessing the contents.
This unit also comes in a small 28 litre size, ideal for bathrooms and smaller patient rooms. As well as a large 80 litre bin, ideal for high volumes of waste.
This Secure Mental Health Bin has been specifically developed for use with clinical and domestic waste. We have been manufacturing sackholder style bins since 1973 and we’ve held the contract for the NHS framework since 1998, so you can be assured that these bins are fit for purpose!
