In today’s fast growing colleges and universities, managing waste on campus can be akin to managing the waste of a small town. In our case study below for instance, the university of Edinburgh is home to over 30,000 students. All of these students need somewhere to put their waste, and more importantly require a simple to understand waste management policy.
At Wybone we specialise in designing the ideal bin for your requirements, and our understanding of the education sector means that we have the perfect recycling bins for our university and college customers.
Ultimately flexible and customisable to suit your needs, the Wybone Box Cycle recycling waste bin range provides clearly marked, easy to use recycling stations to help students deal with their waste in the most environmentally-friendly manner.
Many universities are now adopting a ‘Zero to landfill’ policy, and the Wybone Box Cycle bin range is the perfect system to help achieve this result.

University of Edinburgh Case Study
The University of Edinburgh was looking for a solution to increase their already excellent 63% recycling rate. With an average population of 30,000 students, Fleur Ruckley, Waste & Environment Manager, was looking for a solution that was easy to use and would encourage students and staff to segregate waste.
The aim was to create eye catching recycling stations around the academic buildings within the University, making it easy to identify where waste should be deposited. It was also decided that under desk waste bins would eventually be removed.
Wybone suggested the newly introduced, Box Cycle modular recycling units. The Box Cycle is available as a single unit or in a range of combinations to create stylish and attractive recycling points.
The unit comes as standard with a transparent Lexan body and a powder-coated lid and base. The fully removable lids are laser cut with recycling or general waste apertures and WRAP iconography signifies the waste stream. The lid also holds the sack in place to ensure waste is always collected in the bag. The galvanised steel lid and base comes with a ten-year anti-perforation warranty for added peace of mind.
Sophie Rippinger, Waste and Recycling Officer at the University of Edinburgh initially commented, “from day one Wybone have put a lot of effort and resources into designing a very original concept of a transparent internal recycling bin. The Box Cycle bins totally suit our needs and look amazing! It is wonderful working with such a cooperative and enthusiastic manufacturer.”
Five years on from the initial enquiry and installation of the units, Fleur commented “designed for the purpose of enhancing recycling quality, flexibility, durability and ease of cleaning, the Box Cycles – with their transparent sides and colour coded lids – have over the years been very successful around the estate.”
Responding to the changing needs of our markets, Wybone have recently introduced a plastic variation of the popular Box Cycle, which has all the same great features as the original metal Box Cycle, but with rounded edges and a smooth, shiny finish.
At Wybone, we think our Box Cycle range is ideal for schools, colleges, universities and any business really dedicated to increasing their recycling rates and reducing their carbon footprint (while looking stylish at the same time, of course.)
Each unit has the following great features:
- Lift-off sack retaining lid to ensure waste always goes into the bag
- Transparent body to encourage users to deposit the correct waste
- Tough and durable Lexan body to provide years of use
- Standard WRAP iconography and optional waste stream stickers to show the user exactly what to deposit, even if English is not their first language
- Powder coated metal lid and base with a 10 year anti-perforation warranty
- Laser cut waste and recycling apertures to deter users from using the bin incorrectly
