Tackling household food waste with government initiative

January 10, 2019

Last month, it was announced that UK households are set to receive weekly food waste collections in the new year as part of a new government strategy.

Currently only a third of local authorities collect food waste, with an estimated 10 million tonnes of food waste sent to landfill each year. The average family wastes £470 a year by throwing away food and drink and a further £3 billion is wasted by food sectors.

Food waste that is not recycled ends up in landfill, which produces a harmful amount of greenhouse gases that contribute towards global warming and climate change.

The Government have since appointed a Food Waste Champion to help drive forward their plans to reduce food waste in the UK and raise awareness of the issue.

With this new strategy in place, why not collect your household food waste with our Kitchen Caddy. With a 7-litre capacity, our caddies are ideal for home and work environments for the collection of food waste such as potato peelings and uneaten foods. The green unit comes with a lid and handle for easy lifting and tipping.

If you’re looking to collect food waste on a larger communal scale, we have a range of options to suit your requirements. Our Food Waste Wheelie Bin Cover is designed for the hygienic collection of food waste and to hide unsightly wheelie bins. Manufactured from durable galvanised steel, primed and powder coated for maximum corrosion resistance.

Disposing of your food waste couldn’t be easier; simply lift the flap using the stainless steel anti-microbial handle and deposit the rubbish into the awaiting wheelie bin. A gas strut is fitted to the lid to ensure a soft closing motion that gives the user enough time to put their food waste safely in the bin as the lid closes gradually.

We’ve been using the power of social media to encourage food waste reduction and recycling, take a look at what we’ve been up to on Twitter and follow us at @Litter_Bins or give us a like on Facebook.
