Wybone – 2018 in review!January 2, 2019
Another year has flown by and this has been our busiest yet! We’ve rounded up some of our best moments and achievements to share with you from the past year.
Small business with some big orders!
2018 has been the year of big tenders and we have been successful in winning around 50 of them! One of our biggest achievements of the year was securing the Glasgow City Council tender and supplying hundreds of large capacity wheelie bin covers to be sited around Glasgow.
Over the past year, we have supplied litter and recycling bins to Bradford Council, Falkirk Council, York Council, Doncaster Council, Durham Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Glasgow City Council, ESPO, Luton Airport, North Lanarkshire Council, South Ayrshire Council, Stevenage Borough Council, YPO, Wirral Council, Durham Council, South Tyneside Council and North Lanarkshire Council.
We also supply our range of sackholders, including the Capsule II range to Health Facilities Scotland.
We had a big challenge this year to create a bespoke unit for Birmingham International Airport. We worked with their team to create a recycling unit that incorporates a passenger security and liquid preparation area. As a result, we created a new product based on our Lute Recycling Bin, the Airport Preparation Unit was built in a modular style design to make them easy to move and fit together.
We experienced the heaviest snow seen in years at the start of 2018 and we were snowed under with grit bin orders for South Lanarkshire Council. The council ensured that all precautions were taken, with 10,000 tonnes of grit prepared and orders for 690 SFG/17 Grit Bins in just over six months!
We’ve also had a great year working with Trafford Council, who have partnered with Amey to form the One Trafford coalition. We designed and manufactured a triple version of the MV/35C and provided their team with 300 units to be distributed around Manchester as part of their ‘recycling on the go’ campaign.
Over the past year, we have supplied a large amount of cup recycling units through the Simply Cups scheme. Most recently to Green Market, Gunwharf Quays and Edinburgh Airport! Cup recycling has been a big talking point this year and overall, we have sold a massive 244 cup recycling units!
We’ve taken part in more campaigns for charity Hubbub, we even designed a new product for their #DriveDownLitter campaign. We’re heavily involved in their #LeedsByExample campaign to increase on the go recycling and have been offering Leeds based businesses discounts on our Eco Cup Recycling Units.
Increasing our product range
At Wybone, we’re always working to improve our products and make them the best possible quality for our customers. Our design team have been busy this year working with customers to improve existing products and create new designs.
2018 saw the release of the Capsule II All Plastic Sackholder, a product we spent most of the previous year designing and prototyping to understand the requirements of our customers. This new range of sackholders has since been well received by several trusts and is the chosen range on the Scottish Health Framework.
We helped Hubbub with their #DriveDownLitter campaign and designed the new Road Hog Roadside Litter Bin. Based on our traditional Barnsley Bin, this unit features a large hooded top that directs litter into the bin, even when thrown from height or distance. This allows drivers to stay in their vehicles, making it ideal for lay-bys, service stations, drive-throughs and fast food establishments.
We worked with the facilities contractor for the National History Museum in London and manufactured the LBV/20 Transparent Litter Bin. We designed this new product based on our standard LBV/20 glass fibre composite litter bin with transparent polyethylene panels on each side to provide an extra level of safety and security for the museum.
What about all the fun stuff we’ve done?
No two days are the same at Wybone and we had a crazy couple of weeks in February refurbishing two glass fibre cows for Cannon Hall Farm in Barnsley. We used our manufacturing skills to give the cows a new lease of life and place them back on the farm where they belong.
A few of our team took part in a 5k colour run to raise money for Weston Park Cancer Charity in May. We had a great day running on Tinsely canal whilst being doused with paint from bystanders and managed to raise a fantastic £1426 for the charity!
In July, we held a Wybone Golf Day in honour of Mr Wyatt, to raise money for his chosen charity the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The day took place at Hickleton Golf Club in Thurnscoe with 48 players including customers and suppliers taking part in an 18-hole challenge, each with their own special edition golf ball dedicated to the memory of Mr Wyatt. We’re so pleased with how the day went, we’ve already started to plan for next year!
After refurbishing their beloved cows, Cannon Hall approached us again later in the year to help with a new project fitting out their newest area, the dog friendly café, The Lucky Pup. Our design team worked closely with the Farm to manufacture the beams with a bespoke laser cut dog on the bar area.
Wybone go global!
We’re looking to branch out into the international market next year and have already worked with a number of businesses in Europe to get us started. You can see our bins in France, Romania, Seychelles and Portugal!
Celebrating our 50th year in business
In 2019, we will be celebrating Wybone’s 50th year in business. The company was established in 1969 by our late founder Mr Charles Wyatt and has remained on the Platts Common Industrial Estate in Barnsley ever since. Keep your eyes peeled this year to see what celebrations we have in store!
Coming to an exhibition near you!
We’ve got our plans in place for exhibitions and events in 2019. We’ll be starting the new year by travelling to Dubai and exhibiting at Arab Health – showcasing our range of sackholders, including our Capsule II All Plastic Sackholder.
