Wybone Helps Cardiff Schools Prepare For New Waste Separation Regulations In Wales

December 14, 2023

Earlier this year, Wales announced new waste separation regulations that will come into force on the 6th of April 2024. These new regulations are to affect businesses, charities and public sector establishments across Wales.

The new regulations crack down on waste separation with recyclable materials, instructing premises to have easily identifiable separate recycling points to reduce cross-contamination and encourage proper waste disposal practices. For operatives who collect waste, they must do so by collecting waste separately from other recycling material. As shown on the Legislation Gov website, recyclable waste includes:

  • Glass
  • Cartons and similar; metal and plastic
  • Paper and card
  • Food waste
  • Small waste electrical and electronic equipment
  • Unsold textiles

Following these new amendments, Cardiff Council approached us in September to order 1520 Single Box Cycles as part of a project to roll out internal recycling bins that would allow schools to adhere to these requirements. Four schools were initially trialled with great success, and the remaining bins were sent out to a total of 108 schools across Cardiff.

Discussing the project with Michael Wainwright (Commercial Officer at Cardiff Council), he explained, ‘It was important to provide distinct recycling points in schools that had transparent bodies. This was so students and staff could easily see any risk of contamination and identify what students were throwing away. The feedback has been great and we are looking at doing a similar project for County Hall in Cardiff.’

Overall, we are thrilled to hear that our beloved Box Cycle Range has allowed these schools to meet the legislations set out across Wales.

Box Cycle Range

If you’re affected by the new amendments to waste separation in Wales, our Box Cycles have you covered. You can choose to have your Box Cycle Bin in galvanised steel or polystyrene plastic with the option of a 60-litre or 80-litre bin, ideal for areas with reduced space. There’s also a transparent option to show the waste contents inside the bin, often used for batteries or mixed recycling. The lift-off lid makes this bin easy to access and empty, and the new curved lid corners offer a more modern design.

You can combine this bin as one recycling unit or create waste segregation by having one side as a recycling point and the other as general waste. A4 vinyl artwork can be added to signify the purpose of each waste compartment. Alongside schools, we’ve previously manufactured our Box Cycle Range for offices, shopping centres and universities.

With these new legislations set to come into action from 6 April 2024, now is a great time to read up on these new requirements and actions you may need to take to make sure you’re prepared. At Wybone, we have plenty of internal litter & recycling bins to meet these requirements.
