Wybone Supports Chorley Council’s Climate Change Strategy with Dual Litter Bins

As climate change becomes a more prominent threat, councils are trying to dedicate more time and resources towards initiatives that seek to tackle waste pollution, such as recycling and waste strategy objectives. At Wybone we are dedicated to providing solutions that encourage correct waste disposal and support climate change agendas.

We supplied Chorley Council with 18 new dual litter bins, our MLB/224R in July 2022 with one side being a general waste bin, and the other side a recycling bin for plastic bottles, glass bottles and metal cans. We wanted the bins to be distinctive and consistent with Chorley’s household recycling which is why the council opted for the general waste bin to be the usual black with gold trim, and the recycling bin to be bright blue.

The dual litter bins were located in areas that were high-profile and typically received high-footfall such as routes from car parks, the train and bus stations and Astley Park. The bins were clearly labelled to avoid any confusion, and the recycling compartment featured a smaller, round aperture to encourage the correct usage of the bin, and therefore discourage the deposit of larger, non-recyclable items.

The aim of the 6 month trial was to assess how well received the bins would be by the Chorley community, and also see if they would be used correctly. Transparent bin liners were used within the bins in order to identify and verify the contents upon emptying and records were taken of how full the recycling bins were, their contents, as well as how many recyclable items were in the adjoining general waste litter bins.

All of the recyclable litter was temporarily stored in bulk at Bengal Street depot, until it could be transported to the Materials Recycling Facility in Farington by the waste contractor FCC. The recyclable waste needed to be stored so that it could be accurately assessed on how much use the bins received, and how well litter had been separated into the correct compartments.

We are so pleased to say that the strategy was a huge success overall with 70,000 litres, or 2 tonnes worth, of recyclable litter material being collected over the course of the 6 month trial. It was also recorded that less than 1% of bins had any gross contamination of general waste in the recycling compartment and there were very few recyclable bottles or cans in 80% of the general waste litter bins.

Less than 50% of the bins had minor contamination from non-target material; the majority made up of paper cups, and then paper receipts, sandwich and food packets and other items than many people believe to be recyclable, just not appropriate to be recycled alongside bottles and cans.

These fantastic results prove how the implementation of external recycling bins in high-traffic areas can have a significant impact on environmental campaigns and climate change strategies. Utilising our recycling bins can help communities reduce the amount of rubbish they contribute towards landfill or incinerators while supporting sustainability and conservation regimes.

At Wybone we can provide a varied range of recycling bins, with as many compartments as you require for different waste streams. We are proud to supply councils and organisations the necessary units for their climate change strategies and recycling regimes as we believe in protecting the environment however we can.
