Open Top Contour Bins from Wybone; a Brand New Product

Open top Contour bins from Wybone; a brand new product.

Designed in cohesion with Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough, who needed new internal recycling bins to adhere to new GOV.UK simpler recycling legislation. The shopping centre were already using Wybone Torpedo triple bins which had waste streams to segregate dry mixed recycling, but new Simpler Recycling rules mean black bin waste, dry mixed recycling and food waste must all be seperated.

Having worked with Wybone before, Queensgate Shopping Centre got in touch with our sales manager, Mark Hollinsworth, and together drafted the initial concept of an open top version of our Contour bin range, which are originally an external litter and recycling bin with a contoured corner hood and ash tray. The Contour range of bins is becoming immensely popular and can be seen across tertiary education campuses like Surrey College of Technology, and in shopping centres across the UK. This new open top contour idea takes all the elements of the original with its modern and contemporary look, FSC certified Iroko hardwood and galvnised steel fusion, and adapts to the needs of an iternal bin.

Wybone are no strangers to the needs of internal bins, recycling bins, and bins for shopping centres, and we knew than an open top for easy depositing, clear signage for waste streams, large capacity for a high footfall of shoppers, a single door to make emptying easy for operatives, and all the while having a small footprint to take up minimal space, was required. Our in house design team worked together with the shopping centre to create the open top Contour bin as you see it today, meeting all the requirements and helping stay on top of Simpler Recycling legislation.

The resultant bins feature a multitude of custom apertures, collecting black bin waste, dry mixed recycling and food waste, and there’s even a liquid disposal aperture integrated into the food waste compartment, collecting liquids in a separate tube which can be easily lifted out and emptied by operatives. The bins have the classic radius corner shape, galvanised steel bodies which are rust and corrosion resistant, guaranteed for 12 years, and also feature Iroko wood panelling on the front, which is more than just beautiful to look at, but also naturally insect repellant and completely rot-resistant, perfect for bins collecting food and liquid waste.

Our services don’t just stop at supplying bins; together with Queensgate we’ve managed to organise repurposing the 10-year-old Torpedo bins that were on site already, contributing to the shopping centre’s already amazing sustainability commitments, and contributing to their goal of being net-zero by 2050. Wybone also have a net-zero intensity target of 2038, meaning these bins have been responsibly and sustainably sourced, manufactured and delivered.

From Queensgate Shopping Centre themselves: “

We’re really looking forward to seeing these in our Shopping Centre, helping us to ensure compliance in line with the Simpler Recycling legislation as well as supporting our endeavours to improve recycling rates. [They] have been strategically placed within several areas across our mall, enabling us to provide the necessary facilities for our visitors to separate their waste effectively – helping us to sustain our diversion of all waste from landfill, as well as improve recycling rates.”
